Slow Food USA
Slow Food USA is part of the global Slow Food movement creating dramatic change in more than 160 countries. In the US, there are more than 150 local chapters and 6,000 members. Slow Food USA gathers likely and unlikely allies to transform the way people produce, consume, and enjoy food.
A 2023 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported Slow Food USA’s Plant a Seed campaign for school gardens.
A 2021 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported Slow Food USA’s “Plant a Seed, Share a Seed” campaign. In the United States, the funding provided school gardens with a free campaign kit, including seeds and educational material, and also supported a virtual Seed Summit to connect educators and seed advocates with each other. In Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa, the funding supported community seed banks that preserve local seed biodiversity, raise awareness of the importance of being independent from the corporate seed market, and advocate for better national legislation on seeds.
A 2020 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported the Plant a Seed campaign, with a focus on school gardens. The campaign kit included a seed from each of six regions in the United States with a unique relationship to the land and people there. The campaign also included educational material to help teachers and students understand the importance of biodiversity.
A 2018 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported the Plant a Seed campaign, which provides school gardens, Slow Food chapters, farmers, chefs, and individuals across the US with seeds from the Ark of Taste, a biodiverse catalog of endangered seeds. The campaign kits include access to the Burkinabè Bounty film, to make a strong connection with biodiversity efforts in Africa.
A 2017 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported Slow Food USA’s “Plant a Seed, Defend the Future” campaign and the Slow Food Nations event. The event’s goal was to use food as a bridge between cultures—most notably with Mexico. It hoped to convene 400 advocates for a summit and engage 20,000 general public visitors in the middle of the nation, with visiting food leaders from Mexico, Cuba, Kenya, Papa New Guinea, Japan, Hawaii, and beyond.
In addition to support from the Cultures of Resistance Network, director iara lee arranged an outside grant for Slow Food USA in 2022, which supported their Plant A Seed Campaign.
